In twenty years, I’d like to be doing something that makes me happy. At this point, I don’t completely know what that is, but I have at least a few years to figure that out. I’m thinking of majoring in filmmaking or philosophy, however, I can’t know for sure what that will actually be like. Knowing and experiencing are two very different things. You can read a job description and think, “Hey, this sounds amazing,” and then hate every second of doing that job. In light of this, I plan to experiment in college a lot. I really want to make sure that I stay open to different possibilities, take classes that interest me or that I usually wouldn’t think of taking. Travelling abroad would be a great way to gain some perspective, perhaps it could change the way I see things. I love the idea of making short documentaries on different cultures and the different people I meet during my travels. Eventually, at some point in college I’ll figure out what I want to do with my life and then go from there. For right now I think this plan is okay because I know I can depend on myself to get wherever I need to go.
In twenty years, hopefully I’ll have a somewhat steady income with a job that never gets boring. That’s partly why I’m interested in filmmaking. The possibilities are endless. It’s a medium in which to convey anything. However, the industry can be complicated with it’s politics where sometimes people make films for a profit rather than to share ideas. In addition, it’s difficult to get a steady job. People pretty much go from project to project freelancing, which is one of the reasons why it’s so hard to become an actor. To say the least, I have some doubts. I don’t know how everything works, how to get jobs, how to make connections, or whether or not I’ll be good at those things. What I do know it that this matters to me and maybe I can do some good as a filmmaker. Either way, I’m ready for whatever comes my way as long as I end up doing something that I enjoy.
